Shincheonji bible study: The Counselor, The Holy Spirit

 Main reference: John 14, 15, 16

What does the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, refer to in John 14-16?

The Counselor is mentioned in John 14, 15, and 16. The meaning of the Counselor is 'a teacher who protects with grace'. It is explained as one who speaks to the Father in our defense, (1 Jn 2:1 ‘speaks on behalf) and for this reason, the Counselor could be either the spirit, or it could also be the man (flesh) in which the spirit dwells.

God who promised to come in Isaiah 19, came to Jesus as a spirit ( Mt 3:16-17, Jn1:32). He dwelled within Jesus and spoke through his mouth (Jn14:10, 24). God called Jesus a prophet, the Counselor. In Revelation 19 & 22, the angel said to John, 'I am a fellow servant with you' and referred to himself as the spirit of prophecy (Rev 19:20, 22:8-9).

John 14

As the time to bear the cross was coming close, Jesus comforted his disciples telling them, 'I am going there to prepare a place for you. I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.' (:2-3). Jesus also said, 'I am the way' and 'No one comes to the Father except through me'.

According to the passage, the disciples do not seem to know God and Jesus very well (:7). They did not know or realize God was dwelling within Jesus, so Philip asked Jesus to show him the Father. Jesus responded by saying, anyone who has seen him has seen the Father (:8-11). Jesus said that if you love him, you will obey what he commands (:15, 21), and you may ask him for anything in his name and he will do it (:13-14). Jesus also said he will ask the Father and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever – the spirit of truth (:16-17). Just as the spirit of God, living within Jesus, speaks through Jesus, the Counselor the Holy Spirit also speaks through a man, living (dwelling) within the man (the chosen pastor).

Jesus, who had gone to prepare a place and then come back, said that he will come to those who obey his teaching (Jn 14:23). The Counselor, the Holy Spirit, will come in the name of Jesus, as it says in Matthew 23:39, he will teach you all things and will remind you of everything Jesus has said (:26). He will come as the spirit of truth, who will guide you into all truth (Jn16:13). As it is written in the Bible, we should believe that John the Baptist came in the name of Elijah (Mt 11:12-14, Lk1:17), Jesus came in the name of the Father (Jn 5:43), and the Counselor comes in the name of Jesus (Jn 14:26). He has told us before it happens, so that when it does happen we will believe (:29).

John15

Jesus said he is the true vine and his Father is the gardener (:1-8), and 'As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.' (:9-17). Jesus aslo said, 'when the Spirit of truth comes, he will testify about me (Jesus), and you also must testify, for you (the disciples) have been with me from the beginning.' (:26-27).

John16

Jesus said when the Counselor comes, he will convict the world of guilt, in regard to sin and righteousness and judgement: in regard to sin, because men do not believe in him; in regard to righteousness, because you can see him no longer; and in regard to judgement, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.

Hence, 'sin' is not to believe in what Jesus said in New Testament, 'righteousness' is not to see the body of Jesus again, as he now lives as a holy spirit (it is 'righteous' to believe in Jesus as a spirit in his second coming), and 'judgement' is towards the kings of this world. The kings are the devil and its pastors.

The Counselor, who comes in the name of Jesus, will teach only what he hears from Jesus. All that belongs to the Father is what belongs to Jesus (:13-15). A time is coming when he will no longer use parables, but will tell us plainly about the Father (:25). This time is when the Counselor comes, he will completely speak what Jesus was unable to say in his 1st coming (:12). This will be when all scripture is completed, including the book of Revelation. The purpose of God is to create his new kingdom and new people, and when the kingdom and people of God are created, the holy scriptures, the Bible is completed.
